How the SEC Fared in Week One

The Alabama Crimson Tide easily rolled over the Utah State Aggies 55-0 in week one, but what else happened around the Southeastern Conference? Here is what happened in the other thirteen games this past weekend:

Tennessee 59, Ball State 10

The Tennessee Volunteers kicked off the SEC slate on Thursday night, thrashing the Ball State Cardinals by 49 points. Tennessee QB Hendon Hooker went 18-of-25 for 222 yards, with two touchdowns through the air and two on the ground. The Vols face off against Pittsburgh on the road next week.

Missouri 52, Louisiana Tech 24

The Missouri Tigers also opened the season on Thursday night, defeating Louisiana Tech handily. The Tigers excelled in the ground game, rushing for 323 yards behind multiple running backs. The Tigers travel to Kansas State next week.

Texas A&M 31, Sam Houston State 0

Texas A&M earned a shutout victory behind a stout defense against the Sam Houston State Bearkats. Texas A&M QB Haynes King threw for the most passing yards (364) by an Aggie QB since 2018, but threw two interceptions to go along with his three touchdowns. The Aggies host a flashy Appalachian State squad next week.

No. 3 Georgia 49, No. 11 Oregon 3

The Georgia Bulldogs blew out Oregon in Atlanta this weekend. The defending national champions played lights out, outgaining the Ducks 571 to 313. Georgia QB Stetson Bennet threw for 368 yards on 25-of-31 passing. The Bulldogs host Samford next week.

No. 19 Arkansas 31, No. 23 Cincinnati 24

The Arkansas Razorbacks squeaked past Cincinnati on Saturday. The Hogs had a balanced attack passing for 224 yards and rushing for 223. Arkansas hosts South Carolina to open SEC play next week.

No. 21 Ole Miss 28, Troy 10

The Ole Miss Rebels jumped out to an early 21-0 lead on the Troy Trojans in the first half. The Rebel rushing attack led the offense with 266 yards on the ground. Ole Miss hosts Central Arkansas next week.

Florida 29, No. 7 Utah 26

The Florida Gators pulled off a huge upset over the No. 7 team in the nation, taking down the Utah Utes in Billy Napier’s debut as head coach. The Gators scored late to take the lead and earned an interception in the end zone to secure the season-opening win. Florida starts SEC play next week against Kentucky at home.

No. 20 Kentucky 37, Miami (OH) 13

The Kentucky Wildcats earned a season opening win behind QB Will Levis and his 303 passing yards. The Kentucky offensive line, which allowed four sacks, will have to tighten up before heading to the Swamp next week.

Auburn 42, Mercer 16

The Auburn Tigers handled business against Mercer on Saturday in Bryan Harsin’s second season at the helm. The rushing attack led the way with 285 yards, highlighted by Tank Bigsby recording 147 yards on 16 carries. The Tigers host San Jose State next week.

Vanderbilt 42, Elon 31

After destroying Hawaii last week, the Commodores held on to defeat Elon at home. The Commodores had another impressive offensive performance, but the defense allowed 495 total yards. The Commodores will look to go 3-0 as Wake Forest makes a trip to Nashville.

Mississippi State 49, Memphis 23

The Mississippi State Bulldogs avenged its loss to Memphis last season, leaving no doubt in this matchup behind QB Will Rogers. The Bulldogs jumped out early taking a 28-3 lead in the first half. Rogers went off, throwing for 450 yards on 38-of-49 passing with five touchdowns. The Bulldogs travel to Tucson for a late-night contest with Arizona next week.

South Carolina 35, Georgia State 14

Shane Beamer’s squad had to pull away late to take a victory over Georgia State. The Panthers led 14-12 early in the third quarter before the Gamecocks scored 23 unanswered to take the 21-point victory. Spencer Rattler threw for 227 yards on 23-of-37 attempts with one touchdown and two interceptions in his South Carolina debut. The Gamecocks travel to Arkansas next week.

LSU 23, Florida State 24

The SEC was 13-0 heading into Sunday with the Tigers looking to complete a perfect weekend for the premiere conference. The Tigers used a 99-yard drive to pull within one in the final minute, but a blocked PAT proved to be the difference for Bryan Kelly’s squad. The Tigers look to rebound against Southern next week.
