UTPB In Odessa Is Hosting A Sunrise Ceremony Remembering August 31,2019 Mass Shooting
Three years ago on August 31, 2019, everyone in the Permian Basin remembers exactly where they were and exactly what they were doing. On that day a madman opened fire across Odessa leaving eight people losing their lives and 25 wounded. The ages of those lost were from 15-57. Those wounded ranged from a toddler to 3 police officers.
The day will forever be remembered as one of the most horrible days in Permian Basin history. On that day and the days following we all came together as one to help each other heal. Now as we go forward, physical wounds have healed but the emotional and psychological scars were left with many forever. But also on that day and the days following we became "Permian Basin Strong"
On this August 31, 2022, the community is invited to "Shine A Light" at the UT Permian Basin Sports Fields Parking Lot near where The Bright Star Memorial will be built.
The University of Texas Permian Basin is honored to be home to The Bright Star Memorial outdoor plaza.
This beautiful landmark will be a place for the Permian Basin community to gather and reflect while enhancing the University’s campus transformation efforts which coincide with UTPB’s 50th anniversary. UTPB
