Texas Tech head coach Matt Wells announced Friday that senior defensive back Octavious Morgan will medically retire from football.

Morgan suffered a knee injury before the 2018 season and had to sit out last season. He will remain on scholarship at Texas Tech and earn his degree while continuing to rehab his knee injury with the Texas Tech sports medicine staff.

“It’s unfortunate Octavious will not be able to finish out his career on the field,” Wells said. “He is well-liked by his teammates and our staff, and our program wishes him nothing but the best as he finishes his degree.”

Morgan recorded 41 tackles and eight pass breakups during his 2017 junior season, and was penciled in as a starter in 2018 before the injury. In a defensive backfield lacking in depth it's a blow to not have Morgan back on the field, but kudos to the program for keeping him on scholarship so he can finish his degree and get the medical help he needs.
