Texans Players Honor John Metchie With #MyCauseMyCleats

On July 24, 2022, John Metchie III announced that he was diagnosed with leukemia and would likely miss the 2022 NFL season. Fortunately for Metchie, he has APL (Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia), which is the most curable form of leukemia.

Week 13 of the NFL season is designated as #MyCauseMyCleats, which allows for players to get creative with their cleat design in support of a particular cause. The wide receiver room surprised Metchie with their custom cleats in a heartfelt video.

Chris Moore, a fellow Texans wide receiver, believes this is an opportunity to show his appreciation for Metchie, in how he carries himself despite struggling with leukemia. Wilson is one of the 11 Texans players that will honor Metchie on his cleats Sunday against the Browns.

"The energy he brings in this building and this locker room is insane," Moore said. "Especially with what he's going through, he comes in with an attitude that is positive and infectious. Just to see him come out there and see how much he appreciated us doing that for him is awesome."

Since his diagnosis in July, there has been a constant display of support for Metchie from fellow NFL players and collegiate teammates. In the last month, DeVonta Smith and Jaylen Waddle wore shirts to honor Metchie in pregame warmups.

While there is no definite timetable for his return, Metchie hopes to be able to play at the start of the 2023 NFL season.
