Nick Sirianni Wears a Jalen Hurts Shirt and Talks Progress

The future of the quarterback position in Philadelphia has been a widely discussed, but there’s no doubt Eagles head Nick Sirianni has full confidence in Jalen Hurts moving forward. Sirianni showed up the first day of camp wearing a shirt with the face of his quarterback on it. When asked why he was wearing that shirt, Sirianni responded “He’s our quarterback.”

The two of them have a developed a strong relationship over the last year. Hurts responds well to tough coaching from Sirianni. They even share a handshake that was debut in week one of the 2021 season.

Hurts has continued to progress every season as a passer dating back to his days at the University of Alabama. He spent the offseason working on his mechanics to help improve his overall accuracy.

“I saw a more accurate passer in OTA’s,” said Sirianni on Wednesday. “Now, he’s got to go and continue to improve every single day.”

Last season, Hurts threw for 3,144 yards and 16 touchdowns, while adding 784 yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground. The 23-year-old signal caller guided the Eagles back to the playoffs after missing them in 2020. He became the first quarterback in NFL history to throw for 4,000 yards and rush for 1,000 yards in his first 20 career starts.

The Eagles have focused this offseason on running an offense that is tailored more to Hurts' strengths.

"We feel like we've narrowed it down to the thins he like and the things he does well," said Sirianni. "It's the entire group, but Jalen is the first thing on our mind."

Philadelphia pulled off a big trade on draft night, acquiring wide receivers AJ Brown from the Tennessee Titans. Hurts and Brown showed up at the Eagles facility at 6 a.m. Wednesday morning ready to get camp underway.

“That’s just the standard between the two of us,” said Hurts. “We just work. We’re growing with time. We put so much work in this offseason. Me, AJ, Dallas, Smitty — we can just play ball at a high level. DeVonta Smith.

The Eagles open the preseason on Friday, Aug. 12 against the New York Jets.
