LSU's loss to Florida State in New Orleans on Monday night didn't just cause LSU to start with a losing record for the third straight year. It also prevented the SEC from getting a perfect record to start the season.

Alabama handled business as usual, shutting out Utah State 55-0 at home as the No. 1 ranked team. Quarterback Bryce Young looked back in Heisman form already. Young went 18-28 for 195 yards passing, rushed the ball five times for 100 yards and scored six total touchdowns.

No. 3 Georgia also looked ready to defend its national championship by dominating the No. 11 Oregon Ducks 49-3. Quarterback Stetson Bennett went 25-31 for 368 yards and two touchdowns, and the Bulldogs' defense picked off former Auburn quarterback Bo Nix two times in the game. No. 6 Texas A&M defeated Sam Houston 31-0 after a nearly three hour weather delay.

In probably the biggest upset of the week, unranked Florida knocked off No. 7 Utah 29-26 in Billy Napier's first game coaching the Gators. With the lead changing hands for the whole game, Florida took the lead with 1:25 left in the game. Linebacker Amari Burney sealed the game with a diving interception in the end zone. Quarterback Anthony Richardson went 17-24 for 168 yards and rushed the ball 11 times for 106 yards and three touchdowns.

The other SEC scores went as followed:

  • No. 19 Arkansas defeated No. 23 Cincinnati 31-24
  • Auburn defeated Mercer 42-16
  • No. 20 Kentucky defeated Miami (OH) 37-13
  • Mississippi State defeated Memphis 49-23
  • Missouri defeated Louisiana Tech 52-24
  • No. 21 Ole Miss defeated Troy 28-10
  • South Carolina defeated Georgia State 35-14
  • Tennessee defeated Ball State 59-10
  • Vanderbilt defeated Elon 42-31

After Florida State scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter to put LSU down 24-10 with 9:04 left, the Tigers showed resilience by scoring a touchdown to put them back within one possession. LSU forced the Seminoles to punt the ball back to them with 2:15 left.

However, the Tiger's punt returner fumbled the ball for the second time in the game, giving Florida State first and goal at the eight yard line with under two minutes remaining. Three plays later the Seminoles fumbled the ball at the one yard line, giving LSU the ball right back with 1:20 and two timeouts to drive the ball 99 yards downfield.

LSU once again showed their resilience by successfully going downfield and scoring a touchdown on the last play of the game, leaving them a PAT away from tying the game and forcing overtime. However, Florida State defensive back Shyheim Brown had other plans. Brown deflected the PAT into the crossbar and ended the game 24-23, ruining both Brian Kelly's coaching debut with the Tigers and the SEC's perfect Week 1 record.
