Julio Jones is Rocking a New Number With the Bucs
Julio Jones is back to double digits.
The former Alabama standout signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this week for the 2022 season, his twelfth in the NFL. During training camp activities, he was seen sporting a brand-new jersey number.
Jones will wear No. 85 with the Bucs as he joins forces with Tom Brady and Co. in a quest to return the Lombardi Trophy to Tampa Bay. Those digits aren't far off from the number 82 that adorned his jersey at Foley High School.
He wore number 8 for his three remarkable seasons at The Capstone before the NFL's rules necessitated a switch to a two-digit number. That number was 11, which he wore for a decade while setting records in Atlanta. The league rules surrounding numerals for position players changed in 2021, and Jones took the field in the number 2 during his lone season with the Tennessee Titans. That number currently belongs to Kyle Trask, a backup quarterback, on the Bucs.
Is a return to the eighties going to signify a return to form? Time will tell. When healthy, Jones is one of the better wideouts in the game. Though it ended painfully short of a Super Bowl ring, his 2016 season with the Falcons was the stuff of legend.
With Jones's signing, the Buccaneers are hoping that he can remain on the field and get back to putting up big numbers in what could be Tom Brady's final season. Though the end of that pivotal talking point has yet to be determined, what is certain is that the strongly contending Tampa went to a big name for wideout help.
For said wideout, a new team once again means a new number. Alabama and Buccaneers fans are excited to see 85 all over their screens this fall.
