A famous US Army General who led troops in multiple conflicts, including WW I, and chased Pancho Villa all over Mexico may have made Fort Bliss his final post.

US Army General John "Black Jack" Pershing is the only "active duty" 6 star General in history. He fought in the Indian Wars, the Spanish-American War, the Philippines, the Mexican Intervention, and WW I.

While handling the "Mexican Intervention", General Pershing lived on Fort Bliss and his former home still stands. Which is cool since, it seems, he may still live there. Something does anyway ...

General Pershing had a long and storied career that impacted both the El Paso area and Mexico.

Why Did Pershing Come To Fort Bliss?

He was sent here to deal with the growing crisis along the border between Pancho Villa, (a former US ally, whom Pershing had personally met with on several occasions), and the USA following Villa's infamous raid on Columbus, New Mexico.

While here, General Pershing's entire family, (except for one son), perished in a fire at their home in San Francisco at his former post, The Presidio.

That left General Pershing devastated, angry and with nothing else to focus on but the capture of Villa whose Columbus raid had killed both soldiers and civilians. Villa was now persona non grata and Pershing was told to bring him in.

Did Pershing Capture Villa?

In response, President Woodrow Wilson ordered the Army to pursue Villa in Mexico. General Pershing organized 10,000 men for the expedition—including his old 10th Cavalry Buffalo Soldiers.

Though Villa was never caught, talks with Mexican President Venustiano Carranza resulted in an agreement to deter outlaws like Villa from entering the United States. - nps.gov

Where Is General Pershing's Fort Bliss Home?

The Pershing house is located on Fort Bliss at 228 Sheridan Road. It is rarely open to the public ... and even then, usually, only for special occasions ... but you can view the exterior as long as you get a visitors pass.

Is General Pershing's Fort Bliss Home Haunted?

Sir, yes Sir. Past residents and visitors have reported all kinds of things happening in the house including levitating items and cooking smells. There are probably multiple ghosts in the house as the home was an isolation ward for sick and/or dying soldiers.

The Pershing House is said to be the single most haunted structure on Fort Bliss. As much paranormal activity as the home may see, there's really no way to tell whether or not the General himself is responsible for any of it.
