Grounded Zach Wilson Asks New York Jets “Why Me?” Seriously??
Sometimes people can be completely out of touch from the circumstances around them. New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson appears to be one of those people. Many know how Wilson hung his defense out to dry after Sunday's game. Those same people are aware of Zach's general lack of accountability when it comes to his failures on the field. So when Robert Saleh informed #2 of his decision to bench the team's second overall pick in last year's NFL draft, Wilson's response was as expected.
Selfish. According to Andy Vasquez of nj.com, when Saleh told the second year quarterback that he would not be starting on Sunday, the response was, "Why me? Why now?" Uhhh, excuse me Zach. Did you watch Sunday's game? Probably not, if that was your response. Accountability was not something Wilson learned at BYU.
Jets fans had been waiting for two days for Saleh to announce his starting quarterback, hoping that it was not Zach Wilson. Back-up QB, Mike White was announced Wednesday as the starting quarterback for Gang Green on Sunday, as they take on the Chicago Bears at MetLife. White started three games for the Jets last season, in four appearances. The 6'5" fifth round draft pick in 2018 for the Dallas Cowboys, completed 66.7% of his passes with 5 TDs and 8 INTs. He threw for 953 yards. Not great numbers but not much could be worse than Zach Wilson.
The best thing about this move is that it is so un-Jets of Robert Saleh to bench general manager Joe Douglas's second overall pick from the year prior. The New York Jets made a mistake picking Zach Wilson. It happens far more than NFL GM's would like to admit. Now at 6-4, Saleh and Douglas have shown Gang Green fans that they are serious about making the playoffs this year and no player's feelings are going to get in the way of that. Good move.
