Vaccinations do work, and when 80-90% of people in a community are vaccinated, herd immunity does happen, El Paso is proof.

According to the Midland Reporter-Telegram, Midland Health President and CEO Russell Meyers is preaching that message also.

Meyers highlighted the fact that El Paso has 75% of residents 12 and older fully vaccinated and 89% of residents 65 and older are fully vaccinated as well.

“Thirty percentage points more on our population is another 40,000 people that we need to get vaccinated,” said Meyers.

Midland Health has opened a mass vaccination clinic at the F. Marie Hall Outpatient Center (formerly the Midland Memorial West Campus) from 2-4:30pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

El Paso is the first Texas city to reach the status of "herd immunity."

Herd immunity is classified by Johns Hopkins as "When most of a population is immune to an infectious disease, this provides indirect protection—also called population immunity, herd immunity or herd protection—to those who are not immune to the disease.”

Meyers said that the results in El Paso proves "vaccinations work" and “there's more and more evidence all the time that it keeps people out of the hospital and keeps people from dying. Right here in Texas, we have a couple of communities El Paso being at the top of the list where that fact is being proven.”

Unwillingness for people to get the vaccine because of rumors and false information that is being spread through social media and by word of mouth is what is hindering our ability to get to herd immunity across the state and even here in the Midland /Odessa area.

Consult with your doctor or a trusted professional to talk about any concerns you have with the vaccine and get correct information and not some rumor or misinformation that is being spread.
