7 Ways the New Womble Basketball Center at Texas Tech Is Absolutely Perfect
Texas Tech has been hyping up the Dustin R. Womble center for a couple of years now and it's finally finished and open for business. Generally, when something is so hyped for so long, when you finally see it, it's underwhelming. Well, I'm here to tell you nothing about the Womble Basketball Center is underwhelming.
Texas Tech held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday (May 13th) to commemorate the official opening of the $32.2 million facilities that will house both the Red Raiders' and Lady Raiders' basketball programs. Several notable names spoke at the ribbon-cutting, and you can watch the entire event below.
Texas Tech's Dustin R. Womble Basketball Center was funded by philanthropic gifts to The Campaign for Fearless Champions, most notably by the building's namesake Dustin Womble. The facility will provide the Red Raiders and Lady Raiders with a place to not only practice, but work out, eat, hang out, change, shower and pretty much anything else the basketball players and staff would ever need to do on campus.
"This is hands-down the top basketball facility in the country," Texas Tech Athletics Director Kirby Hocutt said on texastech.com "When other athletic programs across the nation describe the ideal basketball facility, there’s no doubt in my mind they’ll point to the Womble Center. This facility would not have been possible without the support of so many of our donors, including the Womble family, who recognized our vision for our two programs and invested in their futures. We are incredibly grateful for every donor at every level for helping us make this a reality."
Texas Tech has already been using the Womble Center for the past few weeks, but the ribbon-cutting officially marks the state-of-the-art facility a reality. And when Texas Tech says state-of-the-art, they mean it. The strength and conditioning area is on par with NBA franchises and has two full-size practice courts.
The 59,000-square foot facility has everything a championship-level basketball program needs to have. It also has things that nobody else has. There are 98-inch screens in the players lounge. There are also video boards in both gyms to replicate game situations, and sound systems that rival the decibel levels of the United Supermarkets Arena.
The video boards are one of a kind.
The facility is something that Texas Tech basketball's new head coach Mark Adams is excited about, too.
"The Womble Center is a great addition for our program that is going to take us to another level. It’s a new chapter for our basketball program where we can get into a facility that has everything we need," Adams said. "It’s a magnificent building that gives us the opportunity to take ownership. I think this is perfect timing to open it up now and gives us a new start. We’re excited to get our team put together and get everyone here so that we can take full advantage of everything this practice facility has to offer."
It's not just the men's program, as so much of the NCAA is focused on. Krista Gerlich and the Lady Raiders will also be able to benefit and grow while using the basketball center.
"We have the absolute best practice facility in the nation thanks to Dusty Womble and his passion for Red Raider Basketball," Gerlich said, excited to use the building for recruiting, "There’s no other place like this in the nation. We are blessed and honored to walk through the doors of the Womble on a daily basis and call it home."
