Tomorrow is St. Paddy's Day, so here are a few things to remember for March 17.

  1. Make sure you wear something green - This is a basic thing to remember if you have friends that love to pinch people. One other thing to remember, underwear doesn't count, make sure whatever you are wearing that is green is visible to all. It is said that St. Patrick actually preferred the color blue but during the Irish Rebellion of 1798, wearing clovers or the color green became a symbol of nationalism.
  2. Green beer is a necessity - You just can't have St. Patrick's Day without green beer, or if you are like me and didn't get the beer gene, any kind of alcohol with green food coloring. Without it, you just feel like the luck of the Irish is not with you. Also, never ever call it St. Patty's Day, it is St. Paddy's Day if you must shorten it.
  3. You need to know the history - Ireland actually did not start celebrating St. Patrick's Day until 1903 and it actually was a quiet religious holiday in Ireland, until the 1960s. St. Patrick was a patron saint of Ireland and the holiday marks the anniversary of his death.
  4. St. Patrick was actually born Maewyn Succat - You would change your name to Patrick too if that was the name you were given. He was actually British also and not Irish, legend tells that he was sold into slavery in Ireland as a teenager but escaped back to England after becoming religious during his captivity and became an ordained priest and converted all the Irish Celtic pagans to Christianity.
  5. Shamrocks are a must on St. Patrick's Day - It is said that St. Patrick used shamrocks, also known as clovers, to explain the holy trinity to the people of Ireland. The Celts also believed that each of the three leaves of the clover had a meaning which is why St. Patrick made it popular.

There now you can celebrate appropriately.
