When it comes to acquiring talent, New York Yankees' general manager, Brian Cashman, is usually operating from a position of strength, be it financially or with his strong farm system that he has carefully cultivated over the past 7-8 years. The Pinstripes own the best record and baseball and with Tuesday's trade deadline looming, the Yankees go in with plenty of chips to play with. That is why names like Juan Soto, Tyler Mahle and Frankie Montas are all within the playbook of Cashman.

Washington Nationals' young star Juan Soto is by far the most dynamic name on the trade market. He will cost a lot in prospects but brings a world of value to whatever club pays the ransom. However, the player that could bring the World Series starved Steinbrenner-owned team the closest to their first ring in 13 years is Oakland A's right-hander Frankie Montas.

The dynamic 22 year-old has struck out 109 batters in 104.1 innings. In that same span, Montas has only walked 28. He has great control and would truly bolster a beleaguered Yankees rotation. Luis Severino is out of action until at least September. Jameson Taillon seems to have rebounded nicely from his slump and Nester Cortes continues to pitch well into unchartered innings territory but how long will that last?

Jordan Montgomery has hit a wall. The lefty has pitched to a 5.25 ERA over his last 7 games. Domingo German pitched well against the Mets but the Yankees brass knows that they will need another reliable starter if they want to win the World Series and now that Luis Castillo is off the market, that guy is Frankie Montas.

According to Jon Heyman of nypost.com Oakland is pursuing some of the Yankees high-end prospects. Heyman said "while the Yankees seem like they want to hold onto Volpe (unless the Nats call them), they are seemingly willing to include Oswald Peraza, yet another shortstop, in the right deal. And considering the other rotation trade options, this may be it." The Dodgers and the Cardinals will be the Yankees main competition to acquire the right-hander. Brian Cashman and Oakland GM, Billy Beane, have always had a good working (trading) relationship. Cashman should use all of his chips to get Montas today.
