A person's character is a foundational part of their self-being. Some NFL head coaches are seen as tough people that love nothing more than football and they find players to win in their systems. Then there are the coaches that breed success within their organizations by creating bonds and beliefs with their players. They are a team. They consider each other family. According to Cincinnati Bengals head coach Zach Taylor, his counterpart in Buffalo, Sean McDermott is definitely a Category #2 coach.

When speaking with Bills beat writer, Matt Parrino from syracuse.com about the events of Monday night, the Bengals head coach talked about how impressed he was by McDermott in the heat of a very serious situation in the middle of a nationally televised NFL game with real playoff implications. “The first thing he said was, ‘I need to be at the hospital with Damar and I shouldn’t be coaching this game,’” Zach Taylor explained to Parrino. “In that moment he really showed who he was. That all his focus was just on Damar and being there for him and being there for his family at the hospital.”

Zach Taylor went on to tell syracuse.com that he had respected McDermott for years. What he witnessed from the Bills head coach in the horrible moments on the field Monday night confirmed all the great qualities he believed McDermott to have. The Cincinnati head coach appears to have some of those same qualities as Sean McDermott. Taylor went to the hospital to see Hamlin and his family on Monday Night.

The true neighbor will risk his position, his prestige, and even his life for the welfare of others.” Sean McDermott certainly measured up to Dr. King Jr's words on Monday night.
