Lions Waive Blough; Sign Sudfeld As Backup QB
The Detroit Lions officially announced on Wednesday morning that they have waived veteran quarterback David Blough (pictured above) and have signed former Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers QB Nate Sudfeld to be the primary backup to starting QB Jared Goff.
Blough, a former Purdue University star, has spent most of the past three seasons with the Lions as a backup QB to Matthew Stafford and Jared Goff.

Sudfeld, a former Indiana University star, has spent his previous six seasons with the then-Washington Redskins (now Commanders), Philadelphia Eagles, and the San Francisco 49ers.
The Lions had given both Blough and Tim Boyle an opportunity to win the backup QB job behind starter Jared Goff this preseason. But neither of them played well enough in the eyes of head coach Dan Campbell and his staff to win the backup job. Boyle was released earlier this week.
The key word with David Blough is WAIVED. There are those who believe that the Lions would like to re-sign Blough to the team's practice squad as an insurance QB if he clears waivers. But if he is claimed off waivers by another team, he is gone from the Lions and then employed by the team that claimed him.
The Lions are now getting ready for their regular season opener. It's on September 11th at Ford Field against one of Nate Sudfeld's former teams, the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles made the playoffs last season, but lost in the Wild Card Round to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on the road.
