Jasmine Walker Finishes First Full WNBA Season
Former Alabama women’s basketball player, Jasmine Walker, finished her first full season in the WNBA on Sunday.
The Alabama grad was selected seventh by the Los Angeles Sparks in the 2021 WNBA draft, making her the first Alabama player to be selected since 2005. Walker’s rookie campaign came to an unexpected end as she suffered a torn ACL early in the season.
Walker finally saw action once again in late April when the Sparks began the 2022 season. In her second year, Walker played in a limited role for the Sparks averaging 8.8 minutes, 1.6 points, and 1.5 rebounds.
In the final game of the season, Walker put up a season-high eight points, in a loss to the Dallas Wings.
The Sparks struggled for the majority of the season, finishing last in the WNBA Western Conference with a 13-23 record. The Sparks recently opened up a national search for the program’s next head coach and general manager, after firing former NBA player Derek Fisher in June.
WNBA teams make many cuts every off-season due to there only being twelve teams in the league, limited spots on rosters, and significantly lower financial support in comparison to the NBA.
Walker looks to keep her spot on the team with roster changes anticipated for the Sparks and many other teams.
The Montgomery, Ala. native was a member of the Crimson Tide from 2017-21. Walker garnered many honors in her time at the Capstone including Katrina McClain Award Finalist, Naismith Trophy Women’s Midseason Team, SEC Academic Honor Roll, and All-SEC First Team.
