El Dorado wears down Andress after a long delay

By Steve Escajeda

After a slow start, the El Dorado Aztecs took advantage of a two-hour lightning delay in a 27-12 season-opening victory over the Andress Eagles Friday night.

After both teams finally returned to the field with the score tied 0-0 midway through the first quarter, El Dorado quarterback Brycen Booth immediately hit Jadarius Sanders with a 45-yard touchdown pass to get the Aztecs going.

El Dorado eventually stretched that to a 21-0 lead before Andress scored a couple of fourth quarter touchdowns, but it was a case of too little, too late for the Eagles.

Booth, a junior, led the Aztecs by completing 8 of his 13 passes for 174 yards and two touchdowns.

Aztec’s star running back Ryan Estrada, who has already committed to play for the University of Minnesota and averaged over 200 yards a game last year, was held in check most of the night but still managed 115 yards on 20 carried and scored a touchdown.

Sanders and Rashan Bryant caught touchdown passes for El Dorado.

Andress junior quarterback Jamari Milton was 15 of 26 passing for 129 yards, including a touchdown pass to Emilio Burciaga. Milton also led the Eagles in rushing with 49 yards on eight carries.

Sophomore speedster Aavant Clayton caught four passes for 48 yards and scored a rushing touchdown for the Eagles.

Up next, El Dorado (1-0) will host the Austin Panthers (1-0), while Andress (0-1) will entertain the Coronado T-Birds (0-1).

Austin wins eighth consecutive coveted claw over El Paso

By Brandon Cohn

In what has been a one-sided rivalry as of late, the Austin Panthers open their 2025 campaign with an impressive 42-13 win over El Paso High at RE McKee Stadium.
It was the 95th “Battle of the Claw,” a historic rivalry that is not only one of the oldest in the state, but in the nation as well.
The Tigers blinked and were down 14-0 in the first quarter thanks in part to the Panthers’ relentless ground game lead by junior Jeremiah Parrish.
El Paso High struggled offensively throughout a windy evening in central El Paso thanks in part to a Panthers’ defense which is usually stifling on an annual basis.
Austin won convincingly thanks in part to a dominant ground game that saw four RB’s score on the evening in Joel Castaneda, Jeremiah Parrish, Roberto Flores and Jacob Rodriguez.  Senior WR/DB Andruw Andujo catch a TD as well.
With the win, the Panthers move to 1-0 on this young season and will travel to face a tough challenge in El Dorado next Friday at the SAC.  El Paso falls to 0-1 with the loss and will host Mountain View next Friday.

Pebble Hills tops Canutillo in non-district opener

By Angel Torres

The Pebble Hills Spartans defeated the Canutillo Eagles 21-12  at SAC 1 to kick off the 2025 High school season.

The Spartans opened the game with a 90-yard that that ended with an Elijah Pena 2-yard TD run. After a long lightning delay, Pebble Hills receiver L.J.Bailey took over the second quarter with two long TD catches. He finished the night with 4 receptions for 108 yards 2 TDs. Momentum changed in the third quarter when Spartans QB Joe Fernandez had a 65-yard run called back which led to his second personal foul penalty and subsequent ejection. He must sit out the first half of next week but went 6-of-11 for 141 and 2 TDs.

Canutillo QB Ceasar Huerta took advantage and tossed two long TD passes of his own. One to wideout Richard Ilano for 78 yards and the second was to David Rivas for 73 yards. The Eagles went for the two-point conversion both times but failed at both attempts. Huerta finished the game going 6 of 15 for 195 yards and two TDs.

Pebble Hills Freshman wideout Noah Tarrant finished the game with three catches for 40 yards and running back Oscar Hernandez rushed 20 times for 119 yards.

Next up, Canutillo host the Montwood Rams before beginning district play against Burgess. Pebble Hills is on the road for the next four weeks beginning next Friday in Midland to take on the Bulldogs.

Spartans L.J Bailey took over the second quarter with two TD catches one for 30 yards in the back of the end zone and the second was a 58 yard bomb.  QB Joe Fernandez had a 65 yard run called back which led to him getting him his second personal foul penalty and he was ejected with 7 minutes remaining in the 4th quarter.

Burges Mustangs gallop over not so scary Bowie Bears, shutting them out 34-0.

By: Sebastian Perez-Navarro

For the first time since 2021, the Bowie Bears faced off against the Burges Mustangs, and like history tends to do, a blowout repeated itself in this matchup.

Going into the game both teams looked to avenge their 2024 losing record season, but the Mustangs simply came out of the gates stampeding, picking off senior, and UTEP commit Johan Camacho for a pick six in Camacho’s first pass attempt of the game. Camacho is committed to play for the Miners in the tight end position.

When reaching the 7:54 second mark in the first quarter, lightning struck. That’s not a reference, that’s literal, following a three year long peculiar tradition of El Paso high school football season openers getting rained out.

After an over one hour and 30 minute pause, the Mustangs were released from their leashes, and never stopped stomping. Around the four-minute mark of the first quarter, junior Daniel Herrera was craving the taste of another touchdown, so– just minutes after gaining a defensive touchdown, Herrera fields a punt return and sprints halfway across the field for his second touchdown of the night.

An early red zone interception didn’t decrease senior quarterback Marcus Sanchez’s confidence, as late in the third quarter, he connected on a 43-yard plus with senior receiver Jayden Bowser.

Senior running back Nezhaul Cisneros buffed up the running game by racking up two touchdowns and rushing for more than 170 yards, leading to a 34-0 shutout win over the Bears.

Burges gears up to face Fabens next week, as for the Bears, they need a quick readjustment as their historic “Battle of the Southside,” rivalry is only days away.
