Get Ready For High School Football Season In Midland-Odessa
Those famous Friday night lights are legendary, especially here in Midland-Odessa. I am not originally from this part of Texas, and even I know that.
I moved here in January 2025, and at that time, football season was already over. So this will be my first time experiencing football season while living in the Permian Basin.
I've heard the stories, seen the movies, the TV shows, and I must admit, I am bursting with excitement.

I am not completely ignorant of the fact that high school football is serious business in the Permian Basin.
Having been my first time, I have compiled a how-to guide on how to do Friday Night Lights the correct way. (According to what locals have told me)
How-To Navigate Friday Night Lights Midland-Odessa Style
1.) Schedule and Plan
The high school games are wildly popular, so it is suggested you get tickets early so that you won't miss out in case of a sellout. Download or check the schedule of your favorite team online so you can plan accordingly.
2.) Tailgating With the Locals
While tailgating in bigger Texas cities may not be something that people do, it is definitely a thing in Midland-Odessa. Setting up folding chairs, blasting music, and cooking/eating is a staple of tailgating. Think of it as a celebration of the game before the game even begins.
3.) Outside Food and Drinks
It is important to know that there is no outside food or drinks inside the stadiums. Concessions are a large part of the game and generate revenue for the school. So it is suggested that you purchase food or drinks while inside the stadium at the concession stand.
4.) Rules Regarding Alcohol and Tobacco
Even though the stadium is not on a school campus, it is owned by the school district and considered an extension of the school itself. That means smoking or the consumption of alcohol is strictly prohibited.
5.) Be Respectful
Sometimes the raw emotions of the game can make us forget that this is not only a game, but a game played by children. It is important to be respectful to the opposing team, parents, or other spectators.
