
Rabid Bats Invade Lubbock, Officials Warn Public Not To Touch Bats
Rabid bats have been found in Lubbock and health officials in Lubbock are taking time to remind citizens that being bitten or scratched by a bat, or any animal really with rabies is not good and could result in death.

At least two bats have been confirmed with rabies in Lubbock and according to KAMC, some dogs have had rabies spread to them according to KAMC. The dogs that were impacted have been under quarantine. Lubbock Animal Services warns citizens that even healthy looking bats can carry rabies. So it's best just to avoid them all together.
The City of Lubbock has provided some tips according to KAMC that can help protect you and your family.
- Do not touch bats. If you find a bat indoors or on the ground, keep children and pets away.
- Call for help. Contact Lubbock Animal Services for assistance with safe removal. If a bat has had contact with a person or pet, it should be tested for rabies. Animal Control will coordinate the testing at no charge to the resident.
- Vaccinate your pets. Ensure dogs, cats and other animals are up to date on their rabies vaccinations.
- Get medical care if exposed. If you are bitten, scratched or have bare-skin contact with a bat, wash the area with soap and water right away and seek medical attention. Rabies is preventable with prompt treatment.
Rabies Can Be Fatal
According to the report and Lubbock Animal Services, rabies can be fatal, but it can be prevented through vaccination after exposure. Taking quick action is key. Lubbock Animal Services urges citizens to call LAS if they have a "bat encounter".
