Take a look around next time you’re out to eat or sitting down for dinner at home — chances are, everyone’s got their heads down staring at a phone screen. Whether it’s scrolling social media, checking texts, or watching the latest viral video, we’ve all seen it (and probably done it too).

As the holidays approach, families will gather around tables for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and numerous festive meals in between. But if you’re hosting this year, here’s a friendly reminder: have a backup plan ready. Because if you don’t, those phones might end up being the center of attention instead of the people sitting right in front of you.

Make This Holiday a Family Game Night

Instead of everyone disappearing into their digital worlds, bring back some good, old-fashioned fun. Make the holidays one big Family Game Night. Pull out those classic board games, challenge each other, and share some laughs.

If board games aren’t your thing, grab a deck of cards, build a puzzle together, or even play a phone-based game that gets everyone involved (but only when the game calls for it!). The point is to reconnect — face-to-face — and enjoy each other’s company.

Let’s be honest — nearly every home in Texas has at least one of these tucked away in a closet or game cabinet:

• Monopoly
• Checkers
• Candy Land
• Dominoes
• Phase 10
• Uno
• Skip-Bo

Those timeless games never go out of style, but there are plenty of fun new options, too. Among my favorites are Backgammon, Chicken Foot, Uno No Mercy, and a newer one a friend introduced us to — Words Are Hard (and it’s just as hilarious as it sounds).

It’s Not About the Game — It’s About the People

At the end of the day, it’s really not about who wins or loses. It’s about spending quality time with the people who matter most — laughing, connecting, and making memories you’ll talk about long after the game is over.

So this holiday season, put away the phone, pick up the dice, move your piece around the board, and dominate the game, baby!
