In 2022, sidewalks across downtown Victoria got a little brighter and a little more colorful. However, all that came to an end weeks ago after the City of Victoria was forced to remove the crosswalk murals.
The removal came after a new statewide TxDOT initiative that banned anything considered “political messages, artwork, or any other non-standard markings that may compromise safety.”
There were a total of 10 sidewalks with murals in Victoria, and each and every one made downtown feel a little less like a pass-through and a little more like a place. Now, it’s back to being plain and neutral; not even the bicentennial mural was spared.

A Necessary Decision

The decision was heavy but a necessary step that the City of Victoria had to take, or it would face financial consequences.

“These new regulations are binding, and the City could lose funding or face other consequences if we do not comply,” said Communications & Public Affairs Director Ashley Strevel. “We remain grateful to those who contributed their time and resources to this project that has been enjoyed by residents and visitors these past few years.”

Now, they’re just gone, scrubbed away after being part of downtown life for years. Even though the paint has been stripped, we are still left with photos and memories.

Check out this small archive of a project that brought color to downtown while it lasted. These images were captured by Danny Vivian Photography.

A Little About the Victoria Crosswalk Art

A total of 10 crosswalks were painted in downtown Victoria by a team of volunteer artists, including Josh Vega and Nathan Rodriguez thanks to a partnership between the Victoria Main Street Program, Victoria Fine Arts Association, and Free Art Victoria.
