The Iowa & Iowa State Rivalry Continues – 10 Ways To Celebrate Cy-Hawk Week
It's Cy-Hawk week in Iowa. The Iowa State Cyclones will be traveling to Iowa City to take on the Iowa Hawkeyes in one of the greatest rivalries in college football which you can hear on ESPN 1170 AM and 104.1 FM.
You might be the biggest diehard fan of one of the teams or just a casual football fan, but either way, there are plenty of ways to get into the excitement of the 69th (and 45th straight) playing of the Cy-Hawk series.
How has the season started for Iowa and Iowa State?
It's only week 2 of the college football season so there hasn't been a lot to see. But, both teams still have a lot to figure out.
Iowa State did what they were supposed to do by beating SE Missouri St. 42-10. That is about how a score should look when a team from the Big 12 faces a team from the Ohio Valley conference. However, ISU did not cover the spread.
On the other hand, while Iowa won their game, they only won 7-3. They didn't open the season against Penn State or UCLA. It was against the South Dakota St. Jackrabbits of the Missouri Valley conference. Not a good start for the Hawkeyes offense with one field goal. Yeah, the other 4 points came from 2 safeties.
No matter how the season started, anything can happen in the Cy-Hawk series. While Iowa leads the series 46-22, every year is different and fun.
So here are 10 ways you can celebrate and enjoy the Cy-Hawk game on Saturday!
Wear your team colors.
Or paint them on your chest. Even if you don't have a Hawkeye or Cyclone shirt, just pull out a black and yellow or red and gold shirt and get in on the fun of the game.
Place a bet on the game.
If you are into this game, you are probably living in Iowa. Which means you can legally bet on the game. Even if it's just $10 on one of the teams, it can add some excitement to the game. There are plenty of different apps to choose from. Find your favorite and make a bet. (For those of you in Illinois or other border states...cross the state line and place your bet!)
Listen to the game loudly so your neighbors have to as well.
Yep, you can listen to the game right here in the Quad Cities in crystal clear audio on ESPN 104.1 FM. If you still like the old-time sound of AM, then check it out on ESPN 1170 AM.
Go to the game.
While tickets for the game are officially "sold out" you can still get tickets on your favorite second-hand ticket site. Just be ready to pay some big bucks.
Eat some corn.
Nobody produces more corn than Iowa. And the name of the series is now the "Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series". So fire up the grill and enjoy some grilled corn.
Tailgate no matter where you are.
Speaking of firing up the grill, tailgate. Even if you are not at the game go ahead and tailgate in your neighborhood. Grill, beer, friends, bags. Bam. You got a tailgate. Oh, and the weather looks like it will be great to sit outside for the tailgating. If you can get a TV outside even better.
Go to a sports bar.
In the Quad Cities, you are going to find WAY more Iowa Hawkeyes bars than you will Cyclones bars. But even if you put the red and gold on you can still find places to go hang out with your friends and not have to worry about the cooking and cleaning of a tailgate.
Decorate your office.
Put up all the signs, posters, and whatever you can of your favorite team. Use the company printer, paper, and ink to print off a bunch of go ____ signs and hang them all over your office. And maybe even your boss's office.
Go bowling.
There would be no Cy-Hawk trophy if it wasn't for this guy and his bowling team. Seriously. Check out its history of it below.
Even if you don't have a team be proud of the rivalry.
Not all states have a rivalry like this. Wisconsin has Minnesota. Illinois has Northwestern. But those don't compare to the instate rivalry of Hawkeyes and Cyclones.
So enjoy the week. Enjoy the game. And let's gooooooo_________!
