The New York Yankees have played five games since the 2022 MLB Trade Deadline. The Yankees have also lost five games since the trade deadline.

Look, correlation doesn't necessarily equal causation on this one, but it's hard not to look at the deadline, the moves that were made, and the way that New York has played since, and think the two are completely unrelated.

The Yankees made a few trades at the deadline, and none of them have panned out exactly the way fans would have wanted. Two trades have stood out among the rest, as moves that the team would probably re-consider making, should they have been given the opportunity to do them again.

Jordan Montgomery Traded to the St. Louis Cardinals

In a move that seemed to take both fans and players off-guard, left-handed hurler Jordan Montgomery was dealt to the Cardinals right before the deadline. The team received outfielder Harrison Bader in return for Montgomery, who will bring a bit of stability to center field upon his return from the injured list.

Montgomery made his first start in St. Louis, however, against his old team, and promptly pitched a gem. The Cardinals would go on to win the game, 1-0, as part of their three-game weekend sweep of the Bombers.

Montgomery's counterpart in the game, Domingo German, pitched very well for the Yankees that night. That said, will he be able to pitch at that level consistently? Can Frankie Montas bounce back after a poor start on Sunday? Will Luis Severino return healthy, and will Jameson Taillon re-discover his form in the latter months of the regular season?

Those are a lot of question marks, all of which are related to the starting rotation. It's left me with this question of my own: was trading Montgomery a mistake, that will hurt the Yankees in the long-run?

Joey Gallo Dealt to the Los Angeles Dodgers

Let's get this out of the way: the New York Yankees needed to trade Joey Gallo. They didn't have a choice, and Brian Cashman was able to get value in return for the struggling outfielder. For that, he should be applauded.

That said, the records of the two teams involved (Yankees and LA Dodgers) since the trade was made are astounding: the Dodgers are 5-0, while the Yankees are 0-5.

The problem I have with this trade isn't the deal itself; it's the team on the other side of it. You traded Joey Gallo to the team that surpassed you as the best in baseball, and the team that you very well may face in the World Series.

This might be considered "bad business", but if I were making that trade, I would've taken a smaller return in order to trade him to a team who wasn't in contention for a World Series title.

Maybe that deal wasn't out there for the Yankees, but I would've done everything I could to make it happen.
