History of Minor League Baseball in Midland:

The history of minor league baseball in Midland dates back to 1928 when the minor league team was the Midland Colts but only played for two seasons in 1928 and 1929.

The next minor league team did not happen until 1937 when the Midland Cardinals were the minor league affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. They lost their major league affiliation after the 1938 season and just took on the name Midland Cowboys for two seasons in 1939 and 1940 before folding after the 1940 season.

It was seven years before Midland would have its next minor league team (1947) when the Midland Indians which were unaffiliated with a major league team until 1957 when the Indians became a minor league affiliate of the Washington Senators for one season and then an affiliate of the Milwaukee Braves in 1958 and 1959 before folding again after the 1959 season.

The next time Midland got a minor league baseball team was in 1972 and that team has had three names but has lasted the longest in Midland's history celebrating its 50th year this season. They started out as the Midland Cubs from 1972 to 1984 (Chicago Cubs), the Midland Angels from 1985 to 1998 (California/Anaheim Angels), and finally the Midland Rockhounds from 1999 to today (Oakland A's).

Midland's ballparks were City Park (where Walgreens is on Illinois and Andrews Hwy) from 1928 to 1951, Christensen Stadium from 1952 to 2001, and Momentum Bank Ballpark from 2001 to today.
