Think Texas Is a Cult? These States Pledge Too
Lately, the internet’s been side-eyeing Texas for its state pledge. From out-of-staters calling it “culty” to viral TikToks of confused newcomers mouthing along in class, the Lone Star tradition is having a moment. But here’s the kicker: Texas isn’t alone. Seventeen states have official pledges of allegiance- and while they may not recite them with quite as much gusto, they’re pledging all the same.
Now, as a born and raised Texan, saying the Texas pledge right after the pledge of allegiance was completely normal. Sometimes it was only said in the classroom, sometimes at sporting or graduation events. It took me awhile to realize that not every state has a pledge!
So, what gives? While Texas might get all the attention (and memes), it’s far from the only state with a loyalty oath baked into its school routine or civic ceremonies. From Alabama to Kentucky, several states have their own flag pledges- some short and sweet, others surprisingly poetic. A few are rarely used, but others, like Texas’, are recited daily in classrooms and at public events.
Curious what other states are pledging to? I’ve rounded up the 16 other state pledges across the U.S.- some are heartfelt, some are a little dramatic, and a few might surprise you. Whether you're a proud Texan or just pledge-curious, here's how the rest of the country shows its state pride.
More Than a Texas Thing: 17 States With Their Own Pledges
At the end of the day, Texas may lead the pack in pledge pride- but it’s not the only state standing at attention. Whether it’s tradition, pride, or just part of the morning routine, these state pledges offer a quirky peek into how different corners of the country say, “Yep, we love it here.”
