While the summer months mean so many good things for many of us, the end of school, pool and lake days, vacation time, and longer days to spend outdoors having fun! But while sometimes it does seem like all fun and games, during the summer is when the critters and the creepy crawlies come out. I have been extremely vocal about my dislike of summer for that very reason. 

Then I read about things like this and it confirms exactly why I feel the way I do about summer.

TEXANS BEWARE OF THE NEW TICK-BORNE DISEASE TO WATCH OUT FOR THIS SUMMER:

Well, this is concerning. It is called Babesiosis. According to the CDC, this 'potentially lethal disease' is carried by ticks. Initially, it can be mistaken very easily for a simple summer cold.

SYMPTOMS OF BABESIOSIS TO WATCH FOR:

According to the CDC, symptoms of Babesiosis are typically asymptomatic or present with mild symptoms.

According to the Mayo Clinic’s Dr. Bobbi Pritt,

They have a fever, chills, body aches and headache; however, some patients may experience more severe symptoms. And babesiosis can even be life-threatening.

 

HOW CAN YOU POTENTIALLY AVOID THIS DISEASE?

*use bug spray containing DEET

*cover up when possible-yes it is hot outside but occasionally long sleeves can be worn or long pants to avoid exposure to areas where ticks are likely to be found.

Have an enjoyable summer but exercise caution when you know you will be spending a lot of time outdoors. Stay vigilant and be safe!
