Alex Jones Faces New Legal Battles Over Sandy Hook Claims
Once again, Alex Jones, perhaps the most polarizing individual in Central Texas, must face serious accusations.
Infowars Founder Faces New Legal Fire
Jones, who started the Austin-based Infowars, a media organization that serves as a platform for conspiracy theories, is facing legal allegations of hiding his money from the families of Sandy Hook victims and is looking to have the allegations dismissed. Jones was ordered by a court recently to pay families nearly one billion dollars after spending years misrepresenting the 2012 school shooting as a hoax.
Allegations of Fraud and Financial Dodging
Lawyers for the families say that Jones transferred several millions of dollars from his own accounts into various business and family-controlled trusts to have the money beyond the court's reach. The court documents refer to the transactions as "fraudulent transfers."
A Hero to Some, a Villain to Others
To supporters, Jones is a proverbial thorn in the side of government control; a freethinker that speaks to their concerns. To many others, especially families who lost children in the shooting, Jones caused and profited from disparate pain by falsely pretending to represent the families.
From Central Texas Icon to National Example
Central Texas is certainly filled with a variety of characters and personalities, but Jones takes the cake. He is not simply a loudmouth, Jones now serves as an example of one of the outcomes of making money and getting attention from false information.
The court will have to determine whether Jones effectively concealed orders to make payments to victims’ families. Either way, Jones' public image is down the drain, and the families are still waiting for their justice.
