Lights Out! Here’s What to Do When You Lose Power In Lubbock
Lubbock has had its fair share of severe thunderstorms and massive power outages in the past. Luckily, the City of Lubbock website addresses such issues.
Did My Power Go Out in Lubbock?
Before we get to the list of steps after a power outage in the Hub City, you can always refer to the outage map from Lubbock Power & Light (LP&L).
Power outages will automatically be reported, but if you feel you really want to emphasize the issue, you can always email lightsout@lpandl.com or call the 24-hour emergency line at 806-775-2509.
Reporting an electric outage is different than reporting a streetlight outage. For streetlights that fail to turn on, for whatever reason, you can report those to the city by calling 3-1-1 or emailing streetlights@mylubbock.us.
How Long Until My Power is Restored?
Power outages can vary based upon the severity of the storm and the amount of houses affected, but rest assured that crews will be dispatched as soon as they can to get your power up in a timely, safe, and efficient manner.
Remember: Just because you lost power doesn't mean your neighbor will. You each could be on separate circuits or your wiring/fuse could be damaged that feeds power to your house only.
LP&L will prioritize restoring power to major circuits that serve thousands of customers first before addressing the smaller groups. This means that, depending on where you live, you may have to wait your turn, however long that may be.
Tips During a Power Outage in Lubbock
LP&L provides tips on living through a power outage and what cautions you must take when the lights go out:
- Always assume fallen power lines are live and dangerous; report them immediately
- Phone lines can be overloaded, so limit your time making calls during power outage emergencies
- Food can stay safely cold in a fridge without power for up to four hours as long as the doors stay closed
- Always have a flashlight and emergency kit available, including a portable phone charger
- Drive with caution as traffic signals may not be working as they should
