Iconic Texas Based Tex-Mex Restaurant Chain Closes All Locations After 36 Years

The restaurant market continues to be rough, even for businesses that have been around for years. It's still a challenge today with prices increasing, staff turnover, and increased competition.

And recently, a long-time Texas based restaurant closed their final location after more than 35 years in business.

Z'Tejas Closes After 36 Years

After 36 years in business, Z'Tejas Southwestern Grill closed its final location in Kyle on June 30. A note on their website said that with the lease ending, it was time to say goodbye.

After nearly three decades of serving communities across Texas and Arizona, it’s time to say goodbye to this chapter. With our lease coming to an end and the challenges of today’s market, we’ve made the very difficult decision to close Z’TeZ’Tejase—our last remaining outpost. Our doors will be closing starting Monday, June 30th. We are deeply grateful to our guests, neighbors, and friends for your support, your stories, and for making Z’Tejas a part of your lives. It’s been our honor to serve you.

Z'Tejas Began in Austin

According to Chron.com, Z'Tejas opened in 1989 on Sixth Street in Austin. It became a go-to destination for Southwestern cuisine. Expansion followed in the 1990's and at one point there were 14 locations across Texas, Arizona, and California. The chain struggled in the mid-2010's according to Chron.com and was eventually purchased by Cornbread Ventures in 2017. In January, Z'Tejas was once again for sale, but no one purchased it.
