Search Continues for Missing K-9 Officer in East Texas
(Palestine, Texas) An East Texas police department is still searching for its missing police dog.
When and Where Hondo Went Missing
K-9 officer Hondo of the Palestine Police Department has gone missing after escaping his handler's enclosure after a thunderstorm rolled through Palestine Sunday night.
As any dog owner knows, dogs can become very skittish when it comes to thunderstorms. Some dogs will seek shelter or refuge in a small place, some will shake uncontrollably, while others will attempt to run away from the loud noises.
K-9 Hondo, a German Shepherd with the Palestine Police Department (PPD), had been let out into the enclosure after the storm, but somehow escaped from his handler’s yard in the Fort Houston neighborhood of Palestine. He was not outside during the storm.
What to Do If You Spot Hondo
Thankfully, Hondo is microchipped, and the Palestine Police Department is asking citizens to be on the lookout for Hondo and, if you see him, to call them immediately at 903.729.2254
At the time of this writing, Hondo is still missing. No update has been given on the Palestine Police Department's Facebook page.

Why K-9 Units Are So Important
K-9 Hondo is vital to PPD because he helps officers carry out searches, tracking, and suspect apprehensions.
Police dogs like Hondo play a crucial role in modern law enforcement. K-9 units are quick and agile and can assist with suspect apprehensions easily. These dogs are trained to detect drugs, explosives, and other contraband.
K-9 units have been instrumental in search and rescue operations and protecting their officer handler. In many cases, dogs can be extremely helpful during arson investigations, too.
